Flying Bear Zip Line Park without proper permits
Last Friday, June 26, the San Bernardino County’s top
land-use official stated that the new zip line park opened without the
proper permits in Bear Valley. Flying Bear Zip Line Park has been open for
about a month, in Cedar Lake, which is located south of the City of Big Bear
Lake. Virtually flying through the evergreens, Flying Bear offers a unique
view of Big Bear Lake.
The company's owner, Adam Bondeson, said he's willing to
cooperate with county officials but said it's his view that Flying Bear's
zip lines should be considered as a legal extension of a ropes course
operated at the affiliated Cedar Lake Camp, which is adjacent the zip line
course.
Julie Rynerson Rock, director of San Bernardino County
Land Use Services, said Flying Bear opened without obtaining a necessary
conditional use permit or having a county official in the field. "We need to
make sure that the structure is sound," Rock said. "They basically just
opened up without any approvals." Rock's department is responsible for
evaluating development plans, building safety and code enforcement. Rock
said Land Use staffers have informed Flying Bear's management that the
company needs to suspend tours until county officials grant a permit and
determine that the zip line course is safe. However, Bondeson stated that he
had not received any order from the County and he expect county officials to
come by this week.
