Great snow
and tourist couldn’t get to Big Bear
By Danielle Seckler
Since the storms started last week, it
looked like a great boost to the sagging economy of the Bear Valley. The
roads were open, then closed, then open and on and on it went. As of today,
Monday, Jan. 25th, the roads are open to only residents, who have
proof that they are residents. Over the weekend, electricity was out in many
parts of the valley. The 9-1-1 system was not working in parts of the
valley. Trees blocked roads. High winds caused huge snow drifts, which were
impassible. An avalanche caused the Arctic Circle to be closed for most
Saturday and Sunday. To say that it was a mess is an understatement.
As food and fuel became low; the CHP
escorted trucks to the valley over the weekend. Calfire sent 6 crews to help
with the clean up mess. Fire crews, police and Caltrans were on overtime.
However, with the all that assistance, the roads can not be opened for
tourists. This could quash the hopes of local businesses to get an economic
boost. The snow resorts will not be affected as much, since their season
consists of both customers who stay for a few nights and the day-trippers.
It is the lodging and restaurant businesses, who will feel it the most.
As of Tuesday, Jan 26th, the
roads are open to all traffic; however there can be intermittent closings.
The storm that is to arrive today should not dump that much on the valley.
The weather service is saying that it should be about ½ inch during the day
and about an inch tonight. After this, it looks like a break for a while and
with the roads open, business should pick up quickly.
